Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations (RII40420) reflects the role of mine deputies, mining supervisors or team leaders in an underground coal mine.
The course provides the skill and knowledge to enable individuals to contribute to the development of technical solutions to non-routine problems, manage teams, apply safety management plans to the workplace and implement risk management systems.
Who Should Attend?
Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations is one of the prerequisites for sitting the statutory exams for a mine deputy in both New South Wales and Queensland.
The training is also suitable for individuals working in underground coal mines who are responsible for the quantity and quality of the output of others, contribute to the development of technical solutions to non-routine problems and apply safety management plans to the workplace.
Pathways from the qualification include the Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management.
Subsidised Training Available
Although Strategic Corporate Training is an approved Smart and Skilled provider, subsidised training is currently not available for this qualification due to the exhaustion of our funding allocation.
RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations requires the successful completion of 14 units of competency to achieve the qualification, being 10 core units and 4 elective units.

Recognition

Assessment
Assessment is based on competency, which is the ability to demonstrate specific skills to the standard expected in the workplace.
A range of assessment methods will be utilised by Strategic Corporate Training to assess competence in each unit of the Certificate IV in Underground Mining Operations qualification, including:

Demonstration through questioning (either verbal or written) showing the understanding of the underpinning knowledge of the competencies

Demonstration of practical skill in a workplace or simulated environment

Third party report and employer support documentation
Strategic Corporate Training's Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations course is conducted over a 12 month period by our statutory qualified trainers who provide hands-on knowledge and guidance throughout the student’s studies.
Students are required to attend 13 days of classroom training (an initial three day block followed by one day each month over 10 months) in addition to completing self directed learning in the workplace. Classroom delivery includes dedicated mentoring sessions on requirements of the deputy application / exam process and is provided to the student at no additional cost.
Training is conducted at our facility in Thornton NSW which is easily accessible for individuals from the Hunter Valley, Maitland, Newcastle Region, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Port Stephens and Mid-North Coast areas.
Although there are no entry requirements, students undertaking this course should have:
- intermediate computer and internet skills for the completion of assessment tasks
- current experience working in an underground coal mine environment
- access to an underground coal mine’s safety management system documentation
It is the prospective student’s responsibility to check on the legislative and occupational licensing requirements for their current/proposed field of occupation.
On successful completion of the Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations qualification with Strategic Corporate Training, students will have gained the skills and knowledge to:

Strategic Corporate Training is an approved provider under the Smart and Skilled program for subsidised training for Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations.
This training is subsidised by the NSW Government.
Under the Smart and Skilled funding, we can offer NSW residents (including employer sponsored students working in NSW) access to subsidised training which significantly reduces the cost of achieving a qualification.
A student's eligibility is not affected if they have previously completed a vocational education and training qualification.
