RII40220 Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) qualification reflects the role of individuals, including open cut examiners, working in surface coal mines, who perform tasks involving a broad range of day-to-day, operational activities in their area of responsibility.
The individuals are responsible for ensuring a safe work environment through applying the safety and health management system in and around work areas of surface excavation, including monitoring the quantity and quality of output, supervising others and applying solutions to non-routine problems.
Who Should Attend?
The qualification is one of the prerequisites for sitting the statutory exams for Open Cut Examiner (OCE) in New South Wales.
It is suitable for workers experienced in surface coal mining operational processes, such as mining supervisors and superintendents, and mining equipment operators aspiring to hold a statutory position at a surface coal mine.
Pathways from the qualification include the Diploma of Surface Operations Management.
A total of 14 units is required to be completed to achieve the RII40220 Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examine) qualification, being 10 core units and 4 elective units.

- RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and health investigations
- RIIWHS402E Examine and maintain mine safety
- RIIWHS404E Implement and monitor health and hygiene management systems
Elective units:
The four elective units are selected based on the student’s work role requirements and in line with the qualification’s packaging rules.

Assessment
Assessment is based on competency, which is the ability to demonstrate specific skills to the standard expected in the workplace.
A range of assessment methods will be utilised by Strategic Corporate Training to assess competency in each unit of the RII40220 Certificate IV in Surface Coal Operations (Open Cut Examiner) qualification, including:

Demonstration through questioning (either verbal or written) showing the understanding of the underpinning knowledge of the competencies

Demonstration of practical skill in a workplace or simulated environment

Third party report and employer support documentation
Strategic Corporate Training's RII40220 Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) course is delivered over a 6 month period by our industry experienced trainers at our training facility in Thornton.
Students are required to attend 12 days of classroom delivery, consisting of an initial three day training session followed by 9 monthly training sessions during the 6 month delivery schedule.
The classroom training is followed by the completion of self directed learning in the student's workplace.
A Student Support Day to assist students with the completion of the qualification (where required) is conducted once training delivery has concluded. Our trainers and staff are committed to providing the necessary support throughout the course to ensure students have the opportunity to successfully complete their qualification.
The lead trainer of our course is Jeff Hanlon, who has the distinct reputation in the resource sector as a highly qualified and industry expert trainer and mentor. Jeff provides current and hands-on knowledge relevant to the actual workplace environment, ensuring high quality learning is delivered throughout the course.

Although there are no entry requirements, students undertaking this course should:
- have intermediate computer and internet skills for the completion of assessment tasks.
- be employed in a surface coal mine or open cut coal mine site.
- have access to a surface or open cut coal mine’s safety management system documentation.
It is the prospective student’s responsibility to check on the legislative and occupational licensing requirements for their current/proposed field of occupation.
